2022 Volkswagen Jetta or VW Taos: which one offers the most advantages?

2022 Volkswagen Jetta or VW Taos

Usually, when we hesitate between two models, they belong to the same category. However, there are times when our hearts sway between two distinct products, as distinct as a car and an SUV.

And it's easy when both products in question belong to Volkswagen and both are of high quality. That's the case with the Jetta sedan and the new Taos SUV.

Now, how do you know which one offers you the most benefits? Let's take a look at a few things.

Fuel economy

Both vehicles have the same engine, a 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder that delivers 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Let's be reassured right away, that's enough. However, because of the weight difference (the Taos is about 250 pounds heavier), the Jetta offers the best performance at the pump.

In combined driving, the Jetta claims only 6.8 L/100 km, while the Taos still gets 7.6 L/100 km in front-wheel drive configuration. For the greatest savings, the Jetta has the advantage.

Storage

However, if we start comparing storage capacities, we have no choice but to turn to the Taos, simply because of its configuration. Sure, the Jetta offers a generous trunk and a spacious interior, but it's impossible to compare it to the layout inside an SUV like the Taos. The latter delivers impressive volume behind the second row of seats, and even more so when you take the time to put the latter down. We're talking about 790 and 1,866 liters respectively, which is more than the 400 liters or so in the Jetta's trunk.

The same pleasure

What remains the same with both models is the pleasure you get from driving them. Yes, the Jetta offers a slightly sportier experience, simply because its center of gravity is closer to the ground and it's a car. However, the Taos is still a lot of fun to drive, not to mention the fact that it offers better visibility, not to mention its ability to accommodate equipment.

The integral gear

Finally, the Taos offers something that the Jetta does not; four-wheel drive models. If that's a priority for you, then the choice between the two becomes easy.

All in all, it's really a matter of needs and preferences that will help you decide the debate. In an ideal world, you would take both to get the best of both worlds.
