The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is now more powerful, more technological and more fun to drive than ever before due to a number of changes that have taken place for the 8th generation of the Golf.
A higher level of performance
With the arrival of the 8th generation Golf in 2022, the Golf R was extensively modified and it is now more fun to drive and more dynamic than any of the previous generations due to a number of new technologies under the skin. The Golf R’s suspension and steering system have been reworked to provide a higher level of grip and handling in tight corners while also being more compliant over road imperfections. The underbody changes also include an increase in the use of high-strength steel throughout the body and chassis in order to make the Golf R more rigid, which also improves the handling.
Opening the hood of the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R reveals the same 2.0L turbocharged engine as before, but it has been modified to deliver more power and more torque, with an output that now reaches 315 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque with the 7-speed DSG transmission or 280 lb-ft of torque with the 6-speed manual.
A fun daily driver
Despite this high level of performance, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is easy to live with everyday and it doesn’t need to be stored in a garage when the weather is less than perfect. This is because the Golf R comes standard with the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system and a number of other technologies that are engineered to make life more convenient, such as the suite of Car-Net connected services.
In addition, the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R benefits from its five-door hatchback body style which makes it more practical than most of its competitors by allowing easy access to the rear seat and by offering up to 977 liters of cargo space when only two people are onboard.
