If you're about to upgrade your Volkswagen and you're wondering which one will be best for your family vacation, you have a lot to choose from.

In fact, there are several models to choose from. To find the right one for you, all you have to do is identify your needs... and your preferences.

Let's take a look at the following five models: the Atlas, ID.4, Taos, Tiguan and the compact Golf.

Atlas

With the Atlas, it's simple, you get the most spacious vehicle. That's true for the number of seats, as seven people can climb aboard. And even if there are five of you traveling, the model is worth serious consideration, as you'll need room for everyone's belongings. With the Atlas, behind the second row of seats, you still enjoy 1571 liters for cargo.

If you have a lot of people, this is the right choice, especially for luggage space.

On the highway, the Atlas is rated at 9.5 L/100 km.

ID.4

If you want to travel in a different way, all-electric, you'll be planning a different kind of vacation. You'll probably want to travel light, as extra weight will affect the vehicle's range. You won't be short of space on board though, with 1818 liters of total space behind the first row of seats.

We agree, you may not travel with your family in an ID.4, because you have to plan stops for recharging. So it's an ideal partner for a little romantic getaway.

Range of the ID.4: 400 kilometers.

Taos

The Taos is aimed at couples without children or with young children. Space is generous if you put the second-row seats down (1,705 to 1,866 liters, depending on the version), but if the little ones are in the second row, it's more limited with 705 to 790 liters of volume behind.

The advantage with the Taos is that you get better fuel economy: 6.6 L/100 km on the highway with a front-wheel drive model, 7.4 L/100 km with an all-wheel drive version. For first family trips where you want to save money left and right, this is an excellent choice.

Tiguan

If you need a little more space, and an occasional third seat, then the Tiguan is worth considering. It offers more space than the Taos, without being as large as the Atlas. It's an excellent compromise, and its 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine still offers an excellent fuel economy rating of 8.3 L/100 km on the highway.

If your family is growing, but not yet too large, this may be the perfect compromise.

Golf

Finally, if you're younger, or older, and the kids are out of the house, the Golf, whether it's the GTI or R model, may be the perfect partner for the vacation drive. Not only does it offer you a practical configuration for carrying luggage, it offers better fuel economy due to its configuration, but it also offers you a driving pleasure unmatched across the range.

As you can see, all five of the models shown can be perfect for your summer vacation. It really depends on your family situation, as well as your preferences for the next vacation road trip.
